Writing
Lisa writes regularly about contemporary art and artists’ archives. In additions to articles and interviews, she has edited two books drawn from archival sources: The Riot Grrrl Collection (Feminist Press, 2013) and Weight of the Earth: The Tape Journals of David Wojnarowicz (Semiotext(e), 2018, co-edited with David O’Neill). Her current book project, Loving Archives, is about artists who care for others’ archives.

Loving Archives tells the story of contemporary artists who have devoted themselves to caring for other people’s archives. Working outside of professional practices, and guided by their own creativity and relationships, they’ve developed novel approaches to preserving and activating the papers of friends and lovers who have died, collectives that have dissolved, and communities that persist. These artists donate their loving labor and money in the service of preserving someone else’s legacy, sometimes at the expense of their own fame or financial security. Based on intimate interviews, and drawing on my relationships with artists and archival caretakers, Loving Archives takes on the art world’s obsession with the theoretical “Archive” to examine actual practices that engage directly with people's lives and the things they leave behind.
